The last space plan challenge elicited some additional comments that I have wanted to respond to. Unfortunately, my 101-year-old Grandmother passed away and I have been occupied with that. A little over a year ago I did a tribute blog post to my Grandma regarding all the things I have in my home that were once hers. You can read it here. It is great having heirlooms that are meaningful, tell a story and are comforting. Do you have a favorite in your home?
One additional question from the last space plan challenge asked about appropriate window coverings for the window on the curved wall. Below is an illustration of what I would suggest.
Fortunately, we have curved rods available these days. Some are flexible enough that you can bend them yourself, to avoid a costly custom rod. I am partial to pleated curtain panels hung high that just kiss the floor. This vertical visual will expand the linear size of the space. I would make sure to stack them off the entire window to let in as much light in as possible. Andy, has another suggestion. What would you do? Keep in mind the wall is curved. See the space plan here.

Hu Kristin,
Sorry about your Grandma 🙁
I’m glad you have all those lovely pieces in your home.
Paula Grace ~
I am sorry to hear about your Grandma.
I re-read you post about her things. I am sure she would be glad that you put her things to good use. What a lovely memory. I think that is what makes a home interesting, to have a sense of history about it. Her silver looks just beautiful in your china cabinet. I remember when I saw the original post about her linens of how pretty they would be for use in a tablescape.
As for heirlooms, I don’t think this really qualifies however my sister died a little over a year ago. She had a passion for jewelry and I happened to get the bulk of it. It was great to remember my sister and also nice because all of the colors go perfect with my skin tone and work well for me. Every time I wear something, I feel close to her and know she would be really happy that I enjoyed it so much.
DM, It is funny you should mention your sister’s jewelry. My Grandma had a ton too. Something for every outfit. When I was little she had this unique jewlelry box on her vanity in her bedroom. Every once in while she would let me sit at the vanity and go through the box. I loved it. My Mom and I went through it last weekend when I was home. I sorted everything and organized it all. I am going to keep the jewerly box and get it refurbished. It is mostly costume stuff and certainly has more sentimental value than dollar value. Maybe, I’ll do the same with a Grandaughter some day.
